Tape types and TV systems we copy
In most cases it is not necessary for you to identify your tape as we copy
almost all domestic tape formats. If we are not able to transfer your tape
there is no charge.
TV Colour Systems: PAL - NTSC - SECAM this is not an
actual tape but how the signal is recorded onto them. For example,
America uses NTSC, some European countries like Russia use Secam.
Australia, New Zealand & Britain, to mention a few, use PAL. Unless
stated on the box you can’t determine what format a tape is by looking at
it. For a complete country listing Click Here
Normal Play (NP) and Long Play (LP): Refers to the
speed the tape was recorded at. In most cases long play doubles the
recording time so even if a tape says 60 mins it may have up to 120
mins on it. You can’t determine what speed it is recorded at by looking.
Only by transferring the entire tape do we know the playing time. LP was
not very common but we certainly do get them.
Video Resolutions: There are 2 main standards. SD = Standard
definition which is what TV has been for decades. HD = High Definition
is the new higher resolution format for Digital TV and video cameras and
comes in various quality levels, these being 720p - 1080i - 1080p.
VHS & Super VHS
VHS tapes are the most common format.
VHS is the tape format you bought or rented movies on.
Dimensions: 188mm x 103mm.
Playing Time: NP 0-240mins LP 0-480mins
Super VHS used same size tape but is very rare.
We can copy all types including Super VHS - NTSC - Secam
Mini DV
These tapes are the last of domestic camera tapes and are still sold.
Dimensions: 65mm x 48mm.
Playing Time: NP 0-60mins LP 0-90mins
Almost all tapes are recorded in Standard Definition format.
However from about 2007 a few semi professional High Definition
cameras also used these tapes. You can’t tell by looking at the tape.
If your camera tape is High Definition we can’t copy it.
We copy all Standard Definition Mini DV tapes
Video8 - Hi8 - Digital8
These formats all use the same size tape. The tape box may say Hi8,
for example, but it could be a Video8 recording.
Dimensions: 94mm x 62mm.
Playing Time: NP 0-90mins LP 0-180mins
Most tapes however play for 60 or 90 minutes
We can copy all types including - NTSC - (Secam probably)
Hard Disk Cameras - SD memory Cameras
Mini DVD Cameras & DVD-RAM Cameras
These are obviously not tapes but the latest method of recording Video
on a camera. Click here for more info on these.
We can convert all these formats into either DVD or digital files
that are more suitable for editing.
